How to Use Lemon Oil

There are three ways to use Lemon essential oil.

1. Topical

Mix one drop Lemon oil with 1 drop carrier.

Rub into skin where needed, avoiding places that will see the sun.

Some good places to apply are the spine, brain stem, and bottoms of your feet.

Carrier is just a fatty oil you have around the house like coconut, jojoba, almond, olive, etc. They help dilute, stretch, and absorb the lemon oil better.

2. Aromatic

Put a few drops in a diffuser.

My favorite will forever be the Desert Mist 12 hour diffuser from Young Living.

You can also put a drop of Lemon into the palm of your hand, rub them together, cup and inhale deeply.

Internal

According to Life Science Publishing, Clove was, “reputed to be part of the Marseilles Vinegar AKA Four Thieves Vinegar that bandits who robbed the dead and dying used to protect themselves during the 15th century plague.”

How to Use Clove Essential Oil:

  • Keep bees at bay: 20 drops Clove, 10 drops Tea Tree, and 10 drops Citronella in a 15mL roller bottle + carrier of choice
  • Layer with the following oils (one drop each) when detoxing: Lemongrass, Helichrysum, Clove, and Patchouli. Rub in this order for 30 seconds each on the bottom of your feet and over the liver and kidney areas. Add 4 drops carrier oil.
  • Diffuse this “Pumpkin Pie” recipe: 3 drops Orange, 2 drops Cinnamon Bark, 2 drops Clove, 2 drops Nutmeg, and 1 drop Ginger
  • Support your respiratory system with this roller bottle: 20 drops Frankincense, 10 drops Ravinstara, 8 drops Clove, 6 drops Myrrh, and 3 drops Sage in a 15mL bottle with your choice carrier.

1.) Growing pains! Dilute and apply right to the sore shins or knees (that’s where our boys hurt the most) or wherever it’s needed.

2.) Use as a part of the Raindrop Technique (included in Kitty and dog Raindrop as well!)

3.) Add to shampoo or conditioner for extra shine.

4.) Add a drop or two to the bath to help wind down at the end of a stressful day.

5) Three drops Basil + 1 dropper of CBD Base for sore muscles.

6.) Add a drop to marinades or pasta sauces for amazing flavor!

17.) Add to veggie capsule for heartburn (it always strikes me right before bed–ugh!): 8 drops Sage, 3 drops Sacred Sandalwood, 2 drops Basil, 1 drop Palo Santo. You can use any single or mix of these oils you have.

18.) Dizziness! While I’ll need to figure out the root cause of any time I’m experiencing dizziness, I’ll grab the Basil and put a single drop under my nose to feel better first.

19.) This one has been put to the test a few times in our house: Place 2 drops Basil on a small piece of cotton and place it in our ear when we have an earache. I’ll also dilute it and rub it around (but not in!) our ear. This is one of the most amazing things we’ve experienced with Basil. It’s our go-to.

20.) Likewise, we’ll do the same when we have ear infections. Of course, I also tag team it with taking Thieves in honey to help in the way it always does in our house–fighting that ick!

21.) Ever get ringing in your ear? So thankful we can take a drop of Basil and rub it along our ears, on temples, forehead, and the back of our neck whenever we need that annoying bit to stop it right now!

22.) Mental fatigue hits me around that middle-of-the-day slump! Breathing in a drop of Basil in my cupped hands perks me right up!

23.) Put a drop on corns and calluses 3 times a day. I can also use this mixture: 4 drops basil, 2 drops Myrrh, 2 drops Cypress, 1 drop Oregano, and 1 drop Hinoki. I’d apply this directly to the corn/calluses undiluted.

24.) I have used this multiple times for migraine, and it just flat out works! Massage Basil onto temples, base of the neck, center of the forehead, and at nostril openings. Massage on thumbs and big toes. Place warm compress with 1-2 drops of Basil on the back of my neck. I like M-Grain (has Basil in it) for this. I’ll also press a drop of Thieves to the roof of my mouth. If it’s sinus related, I’ll also rub Deep Relief along my sinuses.

25.) Okay, listen up new mamas (or older mamas like me, cause this never goes away!): Hemorrhoids. YASSS. Okay, here’s what you do: add 4 drops Basil, 1 drop Cistus, 1 drop Cypress, and 1 drop Helichrysum (or whatever mix of those oils you have on hand) and mix it into some Rose Ointment. You can dip a cotton round into this if you don’t have Rose Ointment, or just spread it on one if you do and place it where the sun don’t shine. If it stings a little, that’s okay. You’re not hurting yourself, promise. We both know those things are buggers. By the next application, you should be feeling some relief. I know I do!

26.) Menstrual cramps,anyone? Grab that Basil! Dilute and rub over your lower back and stomach. Kick it up a notch in the relief department when you add the Basil to a warm compress. Ahhhhh!

27.) Bruise from a kid running into you really hard? No? Just me? 🙂 Add some Basil to carrier and rub over the bruise a couple times a day.

28.) Charley Horse, muscle spasm, or cramps (ugh! Pregnancy attacked me on this front!). Grab some Sulferzyme and add a drop of Basil and chug, girl! Or, if you don’t much love the taste of a pizzeria in your delicious Sulferzyme, you can have your Basil on the side in a veggie capsule. 🙂

29.) In this computer-driven life, Carpal Tunnel can run rampant. I love that I can dilute Basil and massage this into where it hurts most.

30.) Okay, I know this is super “ew,” but I’ve had to use this before. Parasites (which are way more common than I realized!). Take 3 drops in milk or in a capsule twice a day for 7 nights before bed. Rest 7 nights. Do this three times/cycles. I experienced a huge difference.

31.) Poison Ivy/Sumac/Oak. How do my boys always find this stuff? I have gotten rid of it more than once using just oils. Put 4-6 drops Basil and 4-6 drops Peppermint diluted on the affected areas twice a day. You can also add it to a cold compress to help any swelling.

32.) Dilute and use on spine for good spine support and health. I have a disc issue. I love that I can put Basil right on the area when it hurts. Especially when I just seem to have nagging lower back pain. Same for my neck and sciatica (hello, pregnancy!)

A Day in the Life of an Oily Family

How I wish I’d been taught to be an oily family when I was making my home from the start!

Now that I’ve got it, I love to share it with others.

In this article, I’m going to share with you what it’s really like to live this lifestyle.

Wake Up!

Good morning!

To flush our bodies of toxins we’ll encounter out in the world, we use Lemon oil.

Lemon essential oil from Young Living doesn’t have the acidic wear and tear on your teeth that the flesh of a lemon would.

I don’t know about you, but we just don’t drink enough water if we aren’t super intentional about it.

So, we fill up our water bottles first thing (we’ve been loving these bottles!) and put a drop or two of Lemon oil in there to help boost our immune system and help us drink more water.

In the Kitchen

We start our morning in the kitchen cleaning up after breakfast.

What I love about Thieves Dish Soap is how concentrated it is. We get lots of bottles from one!

It also knocks out grease like an old pro.

With two boys and a dog, killing germs and cleaning dirty hands is important.

Being able to split this one soap into four is even better.

I just grabbed these foaming hand soap bottles from Amazon, poured a fourth of the concentrate in, and filled the rest with water.

After clearing out the old and replacing the new I later found 14 bottles in the basement, so…

No telling what we were doing with all those cleaners!

We need the house to smell nice, these homeschooled little nuggets need to focus, and mama needs some chill.

So, we diffuse…all day long!

We had lots to choose from, but Desert Mist is my fave because it’ll diffuse 12 hours.

I’ll put Purification blend in the boys rooms because boys stink and Purification fixes that.

I’ll add something cozy in my room like Orange and Idaho Grand Fir to boost immunity and purify the air, and then some GeneYus from the KidScents line in the homeschool room for the boys.

Frequently Asked Questions

DOES SIGNING UP MAKE ME A “DISTRIBUTOR”?

Nope! You aren’t ever required to sell.

When you become a wholesale member, you get a special link you can share with friends and get credit from their purchases, but there are no minimum sales amounts if you choose to use it.

In fact, 90% of the wholesale members in Young Living don’t do the business side at all. They’re buying from Young Living because of the quality.

WHAT ABOUT MINIMUM PURCHASES?

There are NO minimum monthly purchase requirements.

To remain a wholesale member, you have to make $50 worth of purchases per year to keep your membership.

But if there’s a year that you don’t make a $50 purchase, you can reinstate your wholesale membership discount by just placing a $50 order.

If you do find yourself making regular purchases each month, then Young Living has a rewards program (called Essential Rewards) where you can make a nice percentage back in product credit each month on all of your purchases.

WHY SHOULD I BUY FROM YOUNG LIVING INSTEAD OF OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS COMPANIES?

It does seem like a new essential oils company pops up every day, doesn’t it? 

I can’t speak to the quality of other companies, but I can say that Young Living was the only company in my research of essential oil companies that could answer all of my questions about purity in a way that was satisfactory to me.

Young Living was the only company that:

  • Has their own farms (in the regions where the plants should be grown)
  • Could guarantee that no pesticides or herbicides were used in the growing of any of their oils (they use essential oils for pest control and they do all of the weeding by hand). Organic is not pesticide or herbicide free. It’s a step down.
  • Has their own testing equipment (they do both in-house and 3rd party testing, and use many different testing methods not just GC/MS which only tests for certain chemicals, not whether those chemicals are synthetic or not)
  • Only uses the first distillation of oils instead of adding chemicals to get more out of the plant.

Young Living also was the only company that was directly in charge of essential oil farming operations.

Every other company I researched goes through some kind of an “oil broker” to buy their oils. Even if they’re “sustainably sourced,” that’s not something you want.

They have to trust that the oil broker is telling the truth, who has to trust that the essential oil distilleries are telling the truth, who have to trust that the farmers are telling the truth about what they say they are doing.

With Young Living, you just have to trust one company instead of several.

I felt the most comfortable trusting Young Living since they’re a full-disclosure company.

ANYONE can visit the farms, participate in the harvesting and distillation, view the Young Living labs, and see the entire process. That’s not an option with any other company!

HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH OILS TO USE FOR WHAT?

But this works better than anything we’ve ever tried.

We call this our “wellness arsenal” because we believe God made us to be well and created plants for us to use to this end.

This was how we support our lungs.

Taking away all fragrance, cleaners, and replacing them with Young Living’s safe products made a world of difference.

Oils We Use

Raven is helpful when we have cough and nasty congestion.

We put one drop of Raven in four drops carrier (fatty oil like avocado, olive, coconut, etc) and rub it over our lungs and throat.

Since consistency is key, we make a batch and set a timer on our phone or Alexa to remind us.

Lymphatic Drainage

Okay, the name is gross, but goodness does this work!

Here are the simple directions.

Hydration

Lemon essential oil is our go-to in our reverse osmosis water.

We sip on this in glass only (no one wants to drink petrochemicals!). Keeping up with this hydration process helps flush all the ickiness out of our system.

Nutritional Supplements

Our biggest successes came when we ditched the drug mindset and adopted a supplement/wellness way of thinking.

What’s at the root of this cough and congestion?

Why bandage something without taking care of the cause first?

Okay, I know what you might be thinking.

Pro Tip: Use only reverse osmosis water and boil it in a lead-free kettle for optimal safety.

Thieves tea is my jam, y’all.

Steep your favorite organic tea (though I still think Cinnamon tastes best with these oils!).

This helps us break up our congestion.

Then sip to soothe a scratchy throat and enjoy.

Remake as often as needed.

  1. Steep tea
  2. Add 1 drop Thieves, 1 drop Peppermint, 1 drop Frankincense, 1 drop Copaiba, 1 drop Lavender, and 2 drops Lemon.
  3. Missing any of those in your oily collection? Just throw in what you do have!
  4. Add honey to taste and waft toward you to open your sinuses and start breathing better!
  5. Sip and remake as many times a day as you need.

We use this to soothe sore throat, stem cough, and for a serious immune boost any time we need it.

Put a couple drops in and sit right next to it as you give your body some time to rest.

My favorites for cough are Raven, R.C., Eucalyptus Radiata, and Thieves.

Having a diffuser right next to you as you rest or nap is the best way.

That’s a way to make sure you’re feeling better and staying consistent with your oily routine here, so you can be back to normal in no time.

With all the time we spend looking at blue light, research is finding our eyes are deteriorating faster than any other generation before us.

Blue light blocking glasses like these for adults and these for kids are super helpful as well as Young Living’s IlluminEyes supplement and NingXia Red!

6. Glass Kettle

I love coffee and tea.

A glass kettle like this one keeps me from ever needing a harmful microwave to warm my water.

Even better, you can avoid drinking petrochemicals from heated plastic coffee makers with a Chemex coffee maker instead.

You can also have richer coffee with a Bur grinder, and avoid bleached coffee filters with this reusable filter.

7. Ceramic Neti Pot

I have a love-hate relationship with my Neti Pot, but I cannot deny the power in it!

I was shocked when we did our testing.

Our super high filtration system was not that helpful.

Ideally, a whole home reverse osmosis is best because of how much exposure we have with showering and hand washing.

If that’s out of your price range, a much more doable option is an under-the-sink reverse osmosis with these shower head attachments.

9. Clean Up Your Cleaners

It’s no surprise to learn that household cleaners are seriously dangerous.

Like, reports of holes burned in the esophagus, asthma, and lowered immune system bad.

Why not save yourself a ton of money and health issues?

The best way to do this is to get a refillable mop and the Thieves line.

5% Rule

There’s a rule that says companies only have to make sure 5% of the oil in their bottles is actual essential oil to be considered “pure and therapeutic.”

How the iTovi Scanner Rocked Our World

First iTovi Scanner Experience: Skeptical

The first time I saw the iTovi Scanner, I wasn’t so sure about it.

The scan came up for Thieves (among other oils and products leaning toward immune support), which if you’re not familiar with Young Living Essential Oils, is a blend that we use in our home when we’re sick.

I didn’t feel sick at all.

How could this little hand-held device tell me what oils and oil-infused supplements I needed?

I walked out of my friend’s house thinking this iTovi thing was ridiculous.

The next day, however I came down with one of the worst sicknesses I’d ever had.

All of a sudden, this girl was a believer.

If Only

Had I just taken Thieves, diffused it, and put it on topically that night every hour, there’s a chance I could’ve either avoided the sickness that took me down or at least lessened it.

When I got this report it made total sense.

How to Take Care of Your Diffusers

This quick tips guide will help you take care of one of the most precious items in your home and for your health--your diffusers.

What Kind of Diffusers?

Did you know there are two different kinds of diffusers?

1. Ultrasonic

This is your Aria, Rainstone, Feather the Owl, Desert Mist, Lantern, and other diffusers with an ultrasonic plate.

These use ultrasonic vibrations to put oil into the air.

They also have a great humidifying effect, which is especially wonderful in dry weather.

Many people say to watch adding citrus oils into diffusers because they’ll erode.

This is why I choose Young Living medical grade plastic and only Young Living oils. The purity and diffusers matter.

I’ve tried getting cheap diffusers off Amazon, and they eventually fail me every time.

Now, I just save my money and get the real deal through YL to avoid having to constantly replace the others.

2.Atomizing

This is for the AromaLux and any other diffuser with an atomizer.

An atomizer gives you the scent for your home that we have come to love, but it also has therapeutic and healing capabilities.

It breaks down the oil put into it and puts out small particles that are easier for your lungs and body to absorb.

Which Kind of Water?

The instructions always suggest distilled, but what if you’re a diffusing queen like yours truly and don’t want to lug huge distilled water jugs home from the store each week?

Our family chose another route that affects the quality of our water both in our diffuser and that we drink each day: reverse osmosis.

You can get a whole home reverse osmosis (see an example here) or one to place under your kitchen sink (see an example here).

This ensures we are breathing in and drinking in only the best water available sans prescription meds, heavy metals, and other chemicals.

Cleaning Your Ultrasonic Diffuser

Best practice is rinsing and wiping your diffuser after each use. The type of deep clean that follows is suggested 1-2 times per month.

  1. Turn off and unplug diffuser.
  2. Wipe out the reservoir with a wet cotton cloth.
  3. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean the ultrasonic plate to remove any extra buildup.
  4. Rinse the reservoir with water, wipe it clean, and dry up the excess water with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Your Atomizing Diffuser

  1. Turn off and unplug diffuser.
  2. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and swab to clean ALL areas of the diffuser.

Troubleshooting

  1. Check for power: if the light turns on, the power is working.
  2. Listen for fan: fan should be audible when diffuser is working.
  3. Make sure air vent isn’t obstructed or damaged.
  4. Check ultrasonic plate: if no bubbling is seen after water is added, the ultrasonic plate may need to be replaced.
  5. Check lid: if it’s not flush with the body, it won’t work properly.
