Easy Natural Laundry Freshener

There are some simple ways to find easy natural laundry freshener that will make your family healthier.

This super simple and healthy natural laundry freshener will be the best thing you'll do for your laundry and your family's health!

Laundry Freshener Quick DIY

There is nothing new about the idea of scented laundry.

Our ancestors used to dry their clothes on rosemary or lavender bushes to scent them.

It was also popular to lay sprigs of lavender between the clean linens in cupboards to keep them smelling fresh.

Unfortunately companies have turned this beautiful practice into a toxin-laden dryer sheet we think we can’t live without.

Gratefully, we can!

Enjoy this simple DIY from The Essential Oils Reference Guide:

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 drops Lavender or Lemon essential oil (safest oil choice here)
  • 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil

DIRECTIONS

  1. Add ingredients to a dryer ball or wash cloth and toss into the dryer with your clothes.

My Fake Sensitive Skin No ratings yet.

Sensitive Skin?

For years I was told I had sensitive skin.

Sensitive to what?

They couldn’t tell me.

I was just “born with it,” docs guessed.

Also on the guessing board was that I must just be “prone” to things like acne, yeast infections, rashes, and dry, itchy skin.

I was also told I had oily skin and an oily scalp.

You can see where I’d be a little confused.

The Push

The more I pressed with the question, “...but why?” I only found hard pushback.

Then, at the start of my oily journey, I’d ask if my docs thought I might find some relief looking for the root problem.

No, there’s no way to tell. Until we can learn more about ___(enter issue here)___, here’s a script for ___(insert medicine, antibiotic, cream, etc)___here.”

However, no matter how many of those prescriptions I filled over the next two decades, I’d never even get close to getting better.

In fact, I was getting worse each year.

Empowered

As I steeped myself further into the Young Living community, I read more and more testimonials about people overcoming their sensitive skin when ditching all their products and switching to Young Living’s toxin-free options.

This interested me for a few reasons:

1.) I’d already ditched all dyes, fragrances, and went organic but still had major issues.

2.) I had this new Essential Rewards thing that could help.

3.) I really had no other choice or help.

A Fresh Start

The decision was made to ditch all of my products by taking advantage of the Essential Rewards program.

So, I made a list of what all I needed.

I actually had the entire house plus husband and kid products on this list, but for the sake of the topic of sensitive skin, that part looked a little something like this:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Face Wash
  • Facial scrub
  • Toothpaste/Mouthwash/Floss
  • Moisturizer
  • Toner
  • Makeup (this one particularly freaked me out)
  • Body Wash
  • Shaving lotion/foam
  • Deodorant (also scary to switch)
  • Heat protectant for my 3,000 pounds of hair
  • Lotion (I prefer body cream)
  • Laundry Detergent (assuming since all my clothes are touching my skin, this made sense to me)

Blessing in Young Living

I knew Young Living was supposed to be safe, but I looked up the ingredients anyway.

I couldn’t find anything that would harm me.

In fact, they were the only company I could find who didn’t spray their plants, hand-weeded, and didn’t add anything synthetic to their products, so all systems were a go for Essential Rewards!

Steve (the hubby) and I decided on our budget, figured out which of the products we could stretch (mostly all, as they’re super concentrated), and started in on building a new home like we’d done years ago, but this time we’d do it right.

Results

When you don’t have the budget to buy every single thing in one fell swoop, your rise to normal is a slow progression.

Because of that, I just got used to feeling better without any of my prior symptoms returning.

It didn’t seem like anything miraculous when you’re not exactly in a stage of life where you can focus on yourself, either. Two little boys, a full-time job, friends, family…you get it.

Until one day, years later, I realized just how much better we had become.

Air BNB

Last year, for our ten year wedding anniversary, we took a trip to Boston and stayed at Cape Cod.

We had the cutest little beach house, and it was perfect, except for one thing: the second we walked in the house, we threw the windows open, put all their products under the sink, and after knocking down the intense fake fragrance smell, ran the diffuser like crazy.

We used the towels provided in our Air BNB, and I immediately smelled toxic laundry detergent/fabric softener.

I was nervous, but without any other option, I did what I had to do.

After two days, my skin was itchy, I felt all the symptoms of a yeast infection coming on, and my nose was stuffy.

I was using all of our own non-toxic products.

The only difference was the fragrance in the air and synthetic junk in our towels and sheets.

I had the hardest time sleeping on those sheets and woke well before sunrise just to get out of the bed and away from that intense headache-making smell.

Grateful for Fake Sensitivity

I realized how good I had it with Young Living’s toxin-free lifestyle that weekend.

I can’t believe what a huge shift it was in just a day or two.

Weirdly, I’m glad I had to go back to my old life for just a couple of days.

It hit home even more why my purpose for writing, teaching, and sharing the Young Living lifestyle matters so much.

It further lit my fire to bring this to you every day.

Toxin-Free Laundry No ratings yet.

Less expensive than in the store, safer, and even an opportunity to get money back on one of the toxin-free laundry options.

Toxin-Free Laundry

If you want a healthy life, one of your biggest steps will be switching whatever you get in the store for toxin-free laundry products.

Laundry detergents have serious hormonal disruptors which pollute your homes air, outdoor air, and then hang in your closet seeping out into your breathing air while you sleep.

So, yeah…pretty serious.

Synthetics Out!

While you are cleansing your home from synthetic fragrance, add these to your got-to-go list:

  • air fresheners
  • candles (yes, even soy and other “special” ones)
  • wall plug-ins
  • wax melts
  • fake, store bought essential oils (yes, those are synthetic!)
  • room sprays

Why is it so important to completely rid your home of synthetic smells?

Our homes are 3-5 times more toxic (AKA carcinogenic, hormone disrupting, respiratory debilitating, developmentally harmful, environmentally harmful) than the outdoor pollution because of toxins in our homes. Synthetic fragrance is a HUGE contributor!

More great news?

With your wholesale discount,  dilution of this seriously concentrated product, and utilizing the Essential Rewards program, you will come out far less expensive than in-store and way healthier, too.

Reminder…

There’s a serious misconception that fragrance is somehow natural when it’s labeled as something we commonly use (i.e. grapefruit, lavender, eucalyptus).

The truth is that unless it discloses that Young Living is supplying its oils to create a fragrance, you’re getting synthetic fragrance, which means you’re messing with your body’s hormones, increasing your cancer risk, etc.

Real Life Use

As a mom running every which way, I must say I really don’t mind the five minutes it takes to make the DIY detergent.

The links in the recipe lead to buying in bulk, which means I have all the ingredients I need to make this about once a month for a little over $3 per month, saving me lots without much trouble.

Fabric Softener

Less expensive than in the store, safer, and even an opportunity to get money back on one of the toxin-free laundry options.

One of the worst offenders when it comes to our home’s air quality is fabric softener and dryer sheets.

They release fragrance that sticks to your clothes and whose chemicals enter into your blood stream through your largest organ-your skin.

Some reports have even linked it to seizures in children.

Thankfully, there is a great answer so you can avoid static.

Option 1: Super Fast DIY

This DIY is literally two ingredients. You can add dryer balls to the dryer with a few drops of essential oils (we like the Premium Starter Kit options of Citrus Fresh, Lemon, or Lavender).

Option 2: Online Non-Toxic Fabric Softener

So many people have fallen in love with throwing a Young Living baby wipe in the dryer as their dryer sheet that I have to share it!

Young Living Seedlings Baby Wipes:YL Baby Wipes.

Real Life Use

Mixing two ingredients together once a month for a few bucks and reusing our dryer balls whenever we want a little extra fragrance is my personal choice because it’s just too easy not to!

Final Thoughts…

Just by removing all air fresheners from your home and switching to toxin-free laundry, you have created a much cleaner and safer environment for your family!

While the idea of pulling all the toxins from your home can be daunting, please remember that what you’re doing is making a huge difference and to give yourself grace through this process.

You will get there, and I do so wish I would’ve done it this way instead of the panicky, scrambled way I learned.

Please feel free to message me on my Facebook page or to post your own thoughts and questions, so we can all work together toward a better, cleaner, and safer future!

Safe Pre-Made Option

I love how our clothes smell when we pop a Young Living Seedlings Baby Wipe into the dryer with them!

Such a light smell that I know is safe unlike anything I could find in the store.

Easy DIY Option

INGREDIENTS

A glass container

Baking Soda– we get the big, 5 lb. bag since we use baking soda in so many recipes.

Epsom Salt

3-5 drops essential oil

DIRECTIONS

Fill your container 3/4 of the way full with epsom salts and 1/4 of the way with baking soda.

Stir to incorporate and break up any clumps.

Use 1/2 cup with large loads and 1/4 cup for small loads. Pour right into your washer with the detergent! 🙂

When it’s time to switch over to the dryer: add essential oils (we like Citrus Fresh or Purification for our laundry) to dryer balls like these .

Mistake: Fabric Softener

While we were busy making everything we have smell so fresh and so clean-clean we were actually covering them in some pretty sketchy chemicals. Chemicals that mess with your air quality and harm your family from the inside out.

(If you haven’t gotten your toxin-free wellness kit yet, click here: Young Living Starter Kit)

The ewg.org website rates dryer sheets and other household items with an “A-F” rating.

Take a look to see how the dryer sheets in your home measure up.

You can also read here about what exactly makes dryer sheets such a problem when it comes to the air quality in your home.

I think I was most let down by Babyganics.

I mean, I knew the smell in the fabric softener I had used in the past was not a natural smell, and it had to come from something synthetic to be that strong, but, et tu, Babyganics?

You mixed the word “Baby” with “organics,” and you got me.

But not anymore.

DIY Fabric Softener

If you’ve got two or three minutes and are looking for a quick, easy recipe that works and is toxin-free, you’re going to love this!

We have been using this in place of fabric softeners after trying some fairly horrible recipes.

Our clothes have smelled like vinegar, been so electrically charged we have shocked each other in passing, and grumbled through folding as  we endured multiple zaps.

Finally we agreed on this.

I use this softener with these wool dryer balls to help combat static. We love it! Even in the winter, when static is tough to fight, we have found success!

You’ll need:

A glass container

Baking Soda– we get the big, 5 lb. bag since we use baking soda in so many recipes.

Epsom Salt

3-5 drops essential oil

Fill your container 3/4 of the way full with epsom salts and 1/4 of the way with baking soda.

Stir to incorporate and break up any clumps.

Use 1/2 cup with large loads and 1/4 cup for small loads. Pour right into your washer with the detergent! 🙂

When it’s time to switch over to the dryer: add essential oils (we like Citrus Fresh or Purification for our laundry) to dryer balls like these .

Final Thoughts

Something I really love about non-toxic laundry detergent and fabric softeners is that our boys like to help with the wash.

I love that their tiny hands can hold on to a measuring cup full of something that isn’t harming them if they spill a little here and there.

It’s a great feeling to have soft, fresh laundry that you know is not only safe but effective, too!

You don’t have to sacrifice your health or your wallet for products that work.

Non-toxic fabric softener is a must for your family's health, and these two options are both simple and cost effective!
