Step-by-Step Toxin-Free Guide: Week 10

Step-by-Step Toxin-Free Living Dishwasher Detergent (5)

Once upon a time…

I thought there would never be a dishwasher detergent that actually got my dishes clean.

You know…company-is-coming-over -this-is-not-a-drill clean.

However, once I realized it wasn’t the dishwasher’s fault (installing a new dishwasher is a great way of figuring this out for sure), I started the search.

I guess my first clue there was something really wrong was when the smell of it stung my eyes.

No, none of it touched my eye.

I was legit only doing the squeeze thing. From a safe distance. Really.

Problem…Unsolved

I switched to “Green” brands thinking this would fix things.

Nope.

White, filmy nastiness that was embarrassing to get out of the cupboard.

Strong smells still. Rewashing every dish by hand, which you know I don’t like doing.

I was surprised at what I found on ewg.org where they rate products A-F like this:

My new “safe” ones were listed as toxic!

I felt defeated.

In that moment, I heard every person who ever said, “Everything gives you cancer anymore. Just get what works…”

But there was hope!

Finally. Answers!

There are 18 that rank an “A” on ewg.org, but you have a few options outside of the store-bought detergents.

Option 1:

Every couple months, I throw this simple recipe together. It’s my favorite by far.

One tablespoon per load does the trick!

Sometimes I like to put an extra 1/2 TBS in the prewash spot.

What you need:

A Mason Jar

1 1/2 C Washing Soda

1 C Citric Acid

1/2 C Baking Soda

1/2 C Sea Salt

Add all ingredients in a bowl and stir well. Pour into an air-tight container, or your product will clump together.

HELPFUL HINT: Use 1/4 C Vinegar and 5 drops Young Living Lemon essential oil as your rinse aid!

Option 2:

If you’ve never met the power of Thieves, you’ll be amazed at all it can do.

Because we love Thieves as an immunity booster in our house, we weren’t surprised when we learned it was in their amazing Dishwasher Detergent.

Option 3:

I recently learned that a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner works great in the dishwasher, and it’s true!

That makes 11 toxin-filled bottles I have ditched for this one cleaner!

    1. The link in the recipe is safe, but I always check Think Dirty (a free app) or ewg.org before I try a recipe! 🙂
